Chesapeake Writing Workshop

2:The people behind the Homeric Writers Conference & Retreat are excited to announce The 2015 Chesapeake Writing Workshops — two full-day “How to Get Published” writing events in the Mid-Atlantic area. On Friday, March 27, 2015, there is the Baltimore Writing Workshop — an all-day event in Baltimore, MD. And on Saturday, March 28, there is a separate all-day event in Arlington, VA called The DC Writing Workshop. (The one-day schedules are both the same. Writers should attend one event, not both.) Either workshop is one day full of classes and advice designed to give you the best instruction concerning how to get your writing and books published. We’ll discuss your publishing opportunities today, how to write queries and pitches, how to market yourself and your books, what makes an agent/editor stop reading your manuscript, and more. No matter what you’re writing — fiction or nonfiction — the day’s classes will help point you in the right direction. Writers of all genres are welcome. Learn more.

BOOK LAUNCH: Family Bonds: Free Blacks and Re-enslavement Law in Antebellum VA

2:Between 1854 and 1864, more than a hundred free African Americans in Virginia proposed to enslave themselves and, in some cases, their children. Author Ted Maris-Wolf, Interim Vice President of Research and Historical Interpretation and Abby and George O'Neill Director of the John D. Rockefeller Jr Library at Colonial Williamsburg, explains this phenomenon as a response to state legislation that forced free African Americans to make a terrible choice: leave enslaved loved ones behind for freedom elsewhere or seek a way to remain in their communities, even by renouncing legal freedom. Maris-Wolf paints an intimate portrait of these people whose lives, liberty, and use of Virginia law offer new understandings of race and place in the upper South. A book signing follows the talk.
