Here were the rules for the 2009 Contest:
Submit up to four original, never-published poems by Dec. 15, 2008. A poet may enter only once. Submissions must be mailed to Richmond magazine, Best Poetry Contest, 2201 W. Broad St., Suite 105, Richmond, VA 23220.
Entry fee: $15 (one fee covers all four poems). Checks should be made out to James River Writers.
First prize: $500, plus one or more winning poems published in Richmond magazine and a ticket to the 2009 James River Writers conference.
Two finalists will receive $200 prizes.
Rules: Poems must not include the author's name or will be disqualified. Each submission must be typed and have a cover sheet with the author's name, contact information and the poems' titles. Two copies of each set of poems are required. One poem per page (if poem runs longer than one page, please include poem's title and (page 2) at top of second page; no page should have two or more poems on it; all poems must have titles. Self-addressed, stamped envelope must be enclosed for notification of winners. No poems will be returned. Richmond magazine writers and other employees, and JRW employees and board members cannot enter.
To submit an entry, the writer must be a resident of Virginia, a student at a Virginia college or university, or a member of JRW. The winner will be published in the April 2009 issue of the magazine.
ABOUT THE JUDGES
Head Judge and Final Judge: Ron Smith
Poet Ron Smith (B.A., M.A. M.H., M.F.A.) is the author of the books RUNNING AGAIN IN HOLLYWOOD CEMETERY and MOON ROAD. He is currently Writer-in-Residence at St. Christopher's School and teaches poetry at the University of Richmond. Smith's prose and poems have appeared in many periodicals and anthologies, including THE NATION, THE KENYON REVIEW, THE GEORGIA REVIEW, THE SOUTHERN REVIEW, VIRGINIA QUARTERLY REVIEW, and BLACKBIRD, which also hosts his occasional poetry column Red Guitar. In 2005 he was an inaugural winner of the $10,000 Carole Weinstein Prize in Poetry; in 2006 he became a Curator for that prize. In 2008 he was a nominee for a Governor's Award for the Arts.
Judges: Temple Cone and Susan Heroy
Poet Temple Cone (B.A., M.A. M.F.A., Ph.D.) is the author of five chapbooks, most recently EURYDICE & ORPHEUS (Finishing Line Press). He is an assistant professor of English at the U.S. Naval Academy.
Poet Susan Heroy (B.A., M.H., M.F.A.), winner of a Virginia Prize for Poetry, has taught literature and creative writing at VCU, University of Richmond, and Randolph-Macon College. Her poems have appeared in PRAIRIE SCHOONER, SOUTHERN POETRY REVIEW, HAMPDEN-SYDNEY POETRY REVIEW, and elsewhere.
Reader: Daingerfield Henley
Poet Daingerfield Henley holds both a B.A. and an M.A. in Creative Writing from The Queen's University of Belfast, Northern Ireland; he also trained as a classical actor at The Bristol Old Vic Theatre School in England.
